About Kirkland Childcare and Day Care – Where We Believe Education Begins at Birth

Our Approach to Education

Kirkland Child CareChildren’s brains develop most rapidly between birth and age five, thus these are the most important years of growth, development, and learning. This period builds the foundation for life-long learning and achievement.

Our program is based on a wide range of the best, research-backed early education practices designed to ensure school readiness and provide a strong educational foundation. We believe learning is fun and that children learn best through hands-on play and active participation. These beliefs guide us in creating our warm, supportive and engaging learning environments. It is essential to us that your child feels safe, secure, and loved.

We emphasize partnerships with our families and honor the role of parents as their children’s first and best teacher. The cultural diversity of our community enriches our program.

We recognize and respect the uniqueness and potential of each child and tailor our program to the needs and interests of each individual at his or her own developmental level. We see children as competent individuals who are naturally curious and continuous learners.

Our teachers provide the opportunity for discovery and learning; encourage active exploration and investigation; promote questioning, and guide and facilitate growth and development. We believe children have multiple ways of demonstrating their intelligence.

We believe observation, documentation, and assessment should be daily, on-going and reflective of children’s experiences.

We do these things not because we are required to do so by the State (or by other accrediting and licensing agencies), but because we believe this is what is best for children. In most instances, we exceed and go beyond the guidelines and requirements put forth by these agencies.

This Approach surrounds and guides all that we do. It is the primary basis of our program.

About Montessori Kirkland Education

The world of Montessori is such where children love to learn. Your child’s true nature is the focus of the Montessori Method. Dr. Maria Montessori developed this educational approach to learning based on her observations and research of children’s true nature. This approach focuses on the development of the “whole child” in order to maximize children’s potential and prepare them for life. Referring to the mind of a child between birth and the age of six as the “absorbent mind,” Dr. Montessori believed that these children subconsciously possess a tremendous ability to learn and assimilate from the world around them.

Montessori the best preschool? Classrooms are divided into five major areas. They are Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Math, and Cultural.

Five Pillare of Montessori Education

“The greatest sign of success for a teacher -is to be able to say, the children are now working as if I did not exist”. – Maria Montessori

Sensorial

Montessori sensorial activities are those which refine the five senses tactile, visual, auditory, olfactory, and gustatory senses. Children are particularly receptive to developing their senses from ages 2-6, and it is important to give children at those ages as many sensorial experiences as possible. These materials allow children to distinguish, differentiate, order and refine their senses. They also require a multi-step application which helps children build their work cycle.

Cultural

The cultural areas comprise of Geography, History, Botany, Physical Science, Zoology, Earth Sciences. This is another area which makes Montessori Education so special. According to Maria Montessori- “Let us give the child a vision of the whole universe the universe is an important reality, and an answer to all questions. We shall walk together on this path of life, for all things are a part of the Universe, and are connected with each other to form one whole unity.”

Practical Life

The lessons of Practical Life engage the child in a meaningful activity or “work.” These activities allow children to imitate adult activities while assisting fine motor development, eye-hand coordination, concentration, attention span, and independence, preparing students for academic work ahead.

Areas of Practical Life include grace & courtesy, perceptual motor development, visual motor coordination, care of the person, care of the environment, food preparation and art.

Practical Life lessons incorporate concepts such as classification, volume, equivalency, similarity, less than and greater than, pairing, balance, and geometry. Activities such as folding clothes and bead stringing, in which the child crosses the midline of the body, facilitate the development of neuro-pathways across the left and right sides of the brain.

Math:

According to Maria Montessori “mathematical mind was a sort of mind which is built up with exactness.” The mathematical mind tends to estimate, needs to quantify, to see identity, similarity, difference, and patterns, to make order and sequence and to control errors.

The Sensorial materials in the Montessori classroom lay a strong foundation for Math materials. These activities are exact. They are presented with meticulousness and the activities call for precision so that the child can come into contact with the isolated concepts and through repetition, draw from the essence of each and have a clear abstraction. These concepts help the child to order his mind. He is able to classify experience.

Language:

Development of language in a Montessori environment consists primarily of extending the child’s speaking ability to include functioning with written language also. Written language development proceeds generally through the following stages: development of listening skills, development of writing, pre-reading, and actual reading.

The pre-reading sequence of Montessori Language forms a strong foundation for the other advanced language areas and the foundation for pre-reading is formed by practical life and sensorial. The child’s sensitive period for writing is 3.5 to 4.5 and that of reading is 4.5 to 5.5 years. Thus, it is not surprising for a child to start writing as early as 3.5. The child gets drawn to the language area and feels satisfied working on it because the area meets the child’s biological imperative for writing. When this biological imperative is met, the child is at peace within himself and thus spreads peace for everyone around him.
